As a large event planner (5,000 plus) for the last 20 years I would recommend becoming a member of PCMA & MPI. Try shadowing a seasoned event planner for a week before making the jump. Figure out your niche: think about what type and size of events you are interested in planning. I disagree with dayvemustayne’s comments, event planning can be quite complicated, and it is exceedingly demanding. However, the payoffs can be great: dynamite salary, travel, & lots of fringe benefits.
I know the men hire women to work for them in this field but I wonder if the women ever hire any men. Like with any other business, it seems like they don’t.
When it comes to mixing work with pleasure, observe some important "do's" and "don'ts". For a newcomer to the professional world, an important rule is to follow the lead set by your superiors. As we are encouraged to reach further and do more it is an irony when you spend most of your time on work, you throw your life off-balance and end up being less productive than you could otherwise be. Follow work for pleasure positive steps to bring pleasure and play back into your life without sacrificing your professional goals.
